How to Make Text Bigger on iPhone and Android

If messages, menus, or websites on your phone are uncomfortable to read, you probably do not need a new device. iPhone and Android both have built-in controls that enlarge text, and some settings can make buttons and icons easier to see too. This guide shows where to find those controls, what each one changes, and how to fix a few common problems.

Quick answer: where is the text-size setting?

On iPhone, open Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Larger Text. On Android, open Settings and search for Font size. Use the slider and preview the result.

If you want menus, buttons and icons to look larger as well, use Display Zoom on iPhone or Display size / Screen zoom on Android. Those options are different from font size.

How to make text bigger on iPhone

Use these steps on a recent iPhone version. Some labels can differ slightly by iOS release.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Accessibility, then Display & Text Size.
  3. Choose Larger Text.
  4. Move the slider to the right until the sample looks comfortable.
  5. If you still need bigger letters, turn on Larger Accessibility Sizes and adjust the slider again.

You can also turn on Bold Text in Display & Text Size. This does not necessarily increase the letter height, but it makes strokes heavier and may improve readability.

For a less dramatic change, you can try Settings → Display & Brightness → Text Size. Apple also offers a Text Size control in Control Center that can be useful while using an app.

Make iPhone buttons and icons bigger too

Text size does not change the size of every control. If the keyboard, app icons, or interface elements still feel small, look for Display Zoom in your iPhone display settings.

Choose the enlarged display option, apply it, and check that your favorite apps still fit well on screen. A larger interface displays less information at one time; you can always reverse the change.

How to increase font size on Android

  1. Open Settings on your Android phone.
  2. Use the Settings search bar to find Font size.
  3. Open the matching result and move the slider to enlarge text.
  4. Return to the home screen, messaging app, and browser to check the result.
  5. If controls still look too small, search Settings for Display size and increase that separately.

Android menu names vary among Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy and other brands. Google notes that some apps may not follow the system's font size. If you cannot find a setting, the Settings search bar is often faster than looking through menus.

Samsung Galaxy: useful extra settings

On many Samsung Galaxy devices, look under Settings → Display → Font size and style to adjust font size and, where available, bold font. Screen zoom changes the size of other interface elements.

Some Galaxy models also include Easy mode in Display settings. It can simplify the home screen and make items easier to select. This is optional; you do not have to turn it on merely to enlarge text.

What if text stays small in certain apps?

Changing text size will not damage the phone, and you can restore the original setting whenever you want. The most useful setting is the one that makes text readable without hiding important buttons.

  • Check the app's own Settings, Appearance or Accessibility menu: it may have a separate text-size option.
  • Try a browser's page zoom for hard-to-read websites.
  • Update the app if text scaling is broken or clipped.
  • Use the built-in magnification feature when an app does not support larger fonts.
  • If the page no longer fits, reduce display zoom slightly while keeping the font size comfortable.

A one-minute readability checklist

  • Increase text size first.
  • Enable bold text if that helps.
  • Adjust display zoom only if icons and menus are too small.
  • Check contrast and brightness in your usual lighting.
  • Test Messages, your browser and a banking or travel app before finishing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enlarge text without making app icons bigger?

Usually yes. Change Font size or Text Size first. Display Zoom and Display size are separate settings that also enlarge interface elements.

Why do some Android apps still have tiny text?

Some apps do not support system font scaling consistently. Look for an in-app text-size setting or use screen magnification.

Will changing text size delete apps or messages?

No. These are display preferences. You can return the slider to its previous position at any time.
